Indigenous Knowledge in Transdisciplinary Research and Education: Experiences from Africa

Kabale University, in partnership with the International Science Council (ISC), the University of South Africa (UNISA), and the Society for the Advancement of Science in Africa (SASA), will co-host an international webinar themed “Indigenous Knowledge in Transdisciplinary Research and Education: Experiences from Africa.”

This high-level webinar forms part of the ISC’s global initiative to advance social sciences and promote transdisciplinary research approaches that integrate Indigenous knowledge systems with academic scholarship. The session will highlight African perspectives on how collaborative knowledge production strengthens research, education, and community-driven solutions for sustainable development.

Being listed as a co-host reflects Kabale University’s growing international recognition and engagement in global scientific discourse led by the International Science Council, a prestigious body with worldwide membership.

Keynote Presentations

Keynote 1: Transdisciplinary Research in the African Context
Prof. Norma Romm will examine transdisciplinary research as a practical approach for integrating African Indigenous Knowledge Systems with academic science. The presentation will demonstrate how collaborative knowledge building enhances culturally relevant and socially grounded outcomes in areas such as sustainable development, food security, and health, while addressing the historical marginalization of Indigenous knowledge.

Keynote 2: Ethnoscience and Ethnomedicine in Africa for Social Cohesion
Dr. Daniel Buyinza will explore how ethnoscience and ethnomedicine contribute to social cohesion by strengthening community understanding of nature, health, agriculture, and social organization. He will discuss participatory research models that combine Indigenous observation with modern scientific approaches, emphasizing community relationships, cultural heritage, and global health relevance.

Dr. Francis Akena Adyanga will address the decolonization of education through Indigenous knowledge-centered curricula. Drawing from community-based research experiences in northern Uganda, he will demonstrate how intergenerational learning and community-led knowledge production can enhance inclusion, strengthen education outcomes, and improve public health education across Africa.
