The Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Kabale University is set to conduct a community outreach program at Karoli Lwanga Hospital in Rukungiri District. This initiative aligns with Kabale University’s commitment to engaging in community service and supporting communities within the Kigezi region of Uganda.

Situated in the Kigezi region, Kabale University plays an active role in providing community services to underserved populations. Community service projects, such as this outreach, focus on reaching out to individuals in need at their specific locations, offering direct support and raising awareness about available services. This upcoming outreach will address the psycho-social challenges faced by inpatients in healthcare settings, providing much-needed support.
Purpose of the Outreach:
Research and experience show that inpatients often experience significant psychosocial distress, which can persist throughout their medical treatment. This distress may include a variety of emotional, cognitive, and social issues, affecting both patients and their families. The community outreach aims to offer support, address these challenges, and improve the overall well-being of inpatients and their loved ones.
Program Objectives:
- Goal: To assist patients and their families by assessing and intervening in psychosocial challenges they face during hospitalization.
- Interventions: The program will connect patients and families with necessary resources, provide psychotherapy and counseling, and work to strengthen their social support networks.
- Target Group: Sick inpatients at Karoli Lwanga Hospital.
- Expected Outcome: Enhanced recovery and reintegration into society for patients through psychosocial balance, improved health, and strengthened coping mechanisms.
